A Living Hope and a Sure Salvation

1 ^aPeter, an apostle of Jesus Christ,

To those who reside as ^bstrangers, ^cscattered throughout ^dPontus, ^eGalatia, ^fCappadocia, ^gAsia, and ^hBithynia, ⁱwho are chosen 2 according to the ^jforeknowledge of God the Father, ^kby the sanctifying work of the Spirit, ^{▼▼Lit unto obedience and sprinkling}to ^mobey Jesus Christ and be ⁿsprinkled with His blood: ^oMay grace and peace be multiplied to you.

3 ^pBlessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who ^qaccording to His great mercy ^rhas caused us to be born again to ^sa living hope through the ^tresurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4 to obtain an ^uinheritance which is imperishable, undefiled, and ^vwill not fade away, ^wreserved in heaven for you, 5 who are ^xprotected by the power of God ^ythrough faith for ^za salvation ready ^aato be revealed in the last time. 6 ^abIn this you greatly rejoice, even though now ^acfor a little while, ^adif necessary, you have been distressed by ^aevarious ^{▼▼Or temptations}trials, 7 so that the ^{▼▼Or genuineness
,} ^ahproof of your faith, being more precious than gold which perishes ^aithough tested by fire, ^ajmay be found to result in praise, glory, and honor at ^akthe revelation of Jesus Christ; 8 and ^although you have not seen Him, you ^amlove Him, and though you do not see Him now, but believe in Him, you greatly rejoice with joy inexpressible and ^{▼▼Lit glorified}full of glory, 9 obtaining as ^aothe outcome of your faith, the salvation of ^{▼▼One early ms does not contain your}your souls.

10 ^aqAs to this salvation, the prophets who ^arprophesied of the ^asgrace that would come to you made careful searches and inquiries, 11 ^{▼▼Or inquiring}seeking to know what person or time ^authe Spirit of Christ within them was indicating as He ^avpredicted the sufferings of Christ and the glories ^{▼▼Lit after these}to follow. 12 It was revealed to them that they were not serving themselves, but you, in these things which now have been announced to you through those who ^axpreached the gospel to you by ^aythe Holy Spirit sent from heaven--things into which ^azangels long to ^{▼▼Or gain a clear glimpse}look.

13 Therefore, ^{▼▼Lit belt up the waist of your mind
,} ^bcprepare your minds for action, ^{▼▼Lit be sober
,} ^bekeep sober in spirit, set your ^bfhope completely on the ^bggrace to be brought to you at ^bhthe revelation of Jesus Christ. 14 As ^{▼▼Lit children of obedience
,} ^bjobedient children, do not ^{▼▼Or conform yourselves
,} ^blbe conformed to the former lusts which were yours in your ^bmignorance, 15 but ^{▼▼Lit according to
,} ^bolike the Holy One who called you, ^{▼▼Or become
,} ^bqbe holy yourselves also ^brin all your behavior; 16 because it is written: “ ^bsYou shall be holy, for I am holy.”

17 If you ^btaddress as Father the One who ^buimpartially ^bvjudges according to each one’s work, conduct yourselves ^bwin fear during the time of your ^bxstay on earth; 18 knowing that you were not ^{▼▼Or ransomed
,} ^bzredeemed with perishable things like silver or gold from your ^cafutile way of life inherited from your forefathers, 19 but with precious ^cbblood, as of a ^cclamb unblemished and spotless, the blood of Christ. 20 For He was ^cdforeknown before ^cethe foundation of the world, but has ^cfappeared ^{▼▼Lit at the end of the times}in these last times ^chfor the sake of you 21 who through Him are ^cibelievers in God, who raised Him from the dead and ^cjgave Him glory, so that your faith and ^ckhope are in God.

22 Since you have ^clpurified your souls ^cmin obedience to the truth for a ^cnsincere love of the brothers and sisters, fervently love one another from ^{▼▼Two early mss a pure heart}the heart, 23 for you have been ^cpborn again ^cqnot of seed which is perishable, but imperishable, that is, through the living and enduring ^crword of God. 24 For,

“ ^csAll flesh is like grass,
And all its glory is like the flower of grass.
The grass withers,
And the flower falls off,
25 ^ctBut the word of the Lord endures forever.”
And this is ^cuthe word which was ^{▼▼Lit preached as good news to you}preached to you.
